Our first step in our NHD project was selecting our topic. We were all interested in something about basketball so we decided to research something interesting and history changing basketball topics and we came across Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his journey through HIV AIDS. We found this topic to be very interesting.
We first started researching secondary sources, such as books and websites, so we could get a good overview of the topic. One of the most important parts of our research was the announcement of Magic Johnson's HIV AIDS video . The video mainly showed how everyone all around the world was affected by this event and how his life was changing from this disease.
A website was the perfect way to express our creativity. It allowed us to incorporate many pictures and videos into our presentation, whereas other entries didn’t. We first took a plethora of notes, and acquired parts of Magic Johnson's speech from 1991, We wrote our 5 paragraph essays to our NHD project so that we would know what other information we needed to research. then we edited our paragraphs many times until perfection was reached. When we finally started our website we had to take a lot of things into consideration such as, still making sure we included all of the needed information, pictures, speeches, and video clips. The theme for this year’s National History Day competition is Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events. Our topic was ideal for this theme because it had a major impact in our world today. Without Magic johnson bringing HIV AIDS to the forefront , we wouldn’t be anywhere nearly as advanced in medical research as we are today. This major event also had a huge impact on everyone’s perspective on HIV AIDS and medical research. Magic Johnson inspired millions of people throughout the world, giving them hope, and changing their lives.
